Luke Hartsuyker Announces Retirement from Politics

After becoming the Federal Member for Cowper in November 2001, Luke Hartsuyker has announced he is retiring from politics.

The Cowper MP spoke on radio first with Triple M Coffs Coast on Wednesday morning about his decision to finish up at the next federal election.

During his tenure, Mr Hartsuyker served in various ministerial roles including, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment; Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister; Minister for Vocational Education and Skills; Assistant Minister for Employment and Deputy Leader of the House.

Mr Hartsuyker was elected as the local member after the retirement of long standing Nationals member Garry Nehl almost 17 years ago.

Speaking with Triple M’s Moffee, he said that there have been many great achievements for the region along with the completed dual carriageway on the Pacific Highway in his electorate as well as securing the funding for the Coffs Harbour Bypass in his time.

“We've had the upgrade to the Jetty Foreshores, as well as the stadium which does so much with bringing tourist to our area, it's certainly great when we have all levels of government working together”, Mr Hartsuyker said.

Mr Hartsuyker paid tribute to state member Andrew Fraser for his help over the years, reflecting on the first election night and the nerves.

"I can still remember Andrew Fraser that night on election night, the booth results were coming in, and it was no where near a full gone conclusion, and the results from Sandy Beach came in and Andrew called it and said mate you're off to Canberra".

Looking ahead to retirement, the father of two plans to spend more time at home with his wife and family after his term in politics ends.

“Irene and myself will look forward to having a bit more time and doing some travelling”.
