The bushfire that has ripped through more than 2000 hectares of land in just over 24 hours has been downgraded to "watch & act."
The NSW Rural Fire Service released this statement:
Firefighters are taking advantage of easing conditions into the evening. A large number of firefighters are working to bring the fire under control.
The fire has currently burnt over 2430 hectares.
Residents in the areas of Voyager Point, Pleasure Point, Sandy Point, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Illawong, Menai and Bangor should closely monitor the situation.
Heathcote Road is now closed between Macarthur Drive and New Illawarra Road.
Old Illawarra Road at Barden Ridge has re-opened.
The situation was upgraded early this morning to "emergency warning," the highest level of threat despite the fantastic efforts of firefighters overnight.
Two Evacuation Centres have been set up at Moorebank Sports Club, 230 Heathcote Road, Hammondville and Gymea Tradies Club, 57 Manchester Road, Gymea for those affected.
Police are still currently investigating what caused the initial fire and are asking any witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers (on 1800 333 000), with any vital information.
